How hard is it to cancel Tailscale?

Tailscale scores 72/100 (grade B) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a clearly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve), email.

Last reviewed 2026-06-10 · Documented-Policy tier · grade B

Self-serve via admin console: an Owner, Admin, or Billing admin can change/downgrade the plan (including down to the free Personal plan) from the Billing page of the admin console. This is online and self-serve for monthly subscription and Personal plans. Annual-subscription customers cannot self-serve cancel/change and must contact sales. On usage-based monthly billing, you are charged at the end of the monthly billing cycle for monthly active users, and charges are prorated based on time spent on each plan during the billing period (no explicit refund policy is published). To fully cancel and delete data, the Owner deletes the tailnet in admin console General settings, which immediately cancels any active subscription. No pause/freeze option exists; downgrading to Personal is the equivalent free fallback.

How to cancel Tailscale

  • Channels: online (self-serve), email
  • Official cancellation page: https://tailscale.com/docs/account/manage-plans
  • Pause/freeze: not offered. No pause/freeze option is documented. To stop paying you either downgrade to the free Personal plan or delete your tailnet (which immediately cancels active subscriptions).
  • Account/data deletion: Account/data deletion is done by deleting your tailnet: as the tailnet Owner, go to admin console General settings, select 'Delete tailnet', confirm and click Delete. This permanently deletes all node and user data and metadata from the coordination server; some diagnostic logs persist in backups ~60 days. Deleting the tailnet immediately cancels active subscriptions but does NOT unsubscribe from mailing lists (use email-preferences link). Tailscale states it stores minimal personal data (email, full name, IdP profile link, some IPs). https://tailscale.com/docs/account/delete-tailnet

Scope & fairness

This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
