How hard is it to cancel Starlink?
Starlink scores 98/100 (grade A) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — among the most clearly documented cancellation policies we've scored. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve).
Starlink residential service is monthly with no fixed-term contract and can be canceled anytime online through the Account Home Page under Subscriptions, selecting the service line (SL-prefixed); no phone or email cancellation is required. Billing is tied to UTC, so changes must be made before 12:00 AM UTC on the billing day or they take effect the next billing day; service remains active through the period already paid for (no mid-cycle proration credit on cancel). Hardware is purchased outright and need not be returned, but a kit returned in good condition within 30 days qualifies for a full refund via a prepaid return label, with an extended partial-refund window thereafter in the US/Canada. Reactivation after cancellation is not guaranteed and depends on area capacity.
How to cancel Starlink
- Channels: online (self-serve)
- Official cancellation page: https://starlink.com/support/article/9d43bef2-36fe-bcd1-9f6a-e0304e9cf22e
- Pause/freeze: available — Service can be paused via Standby Mode on Residential (and Roam/Priority) plans, excluding promotional offerings and select kit rentals. Standby Mode keeps unlimited low-speed data (up to 500 Kbps) for a small monthly fee; it does NOT reserve a Residential slot, so reactivation depends on area capacity. On resume the monthly fee is charged immediately, pro-rated. Pausing more than 12 consecutive months may trigger a fee or forced plan change at Starlink's discretion.

Account-level controls (Edit Profile) allow opting out of data sharing with third-party partners and AI training. https://starlink.com/legal/documents/DOC-1000-41799-67

Scope & fairness
This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
