How hard is it to cancel Shopify?
Shopify scores 78/100 (grade B) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a clearly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve), phone.
Shopify merchants can cancel online via Settings > Plan > Cancel plan in the Shopify admin; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle. Shopify Plus merchants must contact a Merchant Success Specialist to cancel. Subscription plan charges are strictly non-refundable with no credits for unused time. A 'Pause and Build' reduced-cost plan is available as an alternative to full deactivation for non-Plus stores.
How to cancel Shopify
- Channels: online (self-serve), phone
- Official cancellation page: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-orgs-and-stores/manage-pricing-plan/deactivate-store
- Pause/freeze: available — Shopify offers a 'Pause and Build' plan at a reduced monthly fee that disables checkout while keeping the storefront and admin accessible; not available to Shopify Plus merchants.
- Account/data deletion: Store data is retained for up to 2 years after deactivation to allow reactivation. Personal data erasure requires deactivating all stores and accounts linked to the email, then submitting a request via Shopify Privacy controls; Shopify takes up to 30 days to process. https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/privacy-and-security/privacy/delete-data

Scope & fairness
This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
