How hard is it to cancel Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 scores 74/100 (grade B) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a clearly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve).

Last reviewed 2026-06-05 · Documented-Policy tier · grade B

Self-serve at account.microsoft.com -> Services & subscriptions: 'Turn off recurring billing' (keep access to the term's end) or 'Cancel'. Prorated credit/refund only if you cancel within 7 days of start or renewal (a handful of countries always prorate); otherwise no refund. An annual plan paid monthly still owes the remainder of the term.

How to cancel Microsoft 365

  • Channels: online (self-serve)
  • Official cancellation page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/cancel-a-microsoft-365-subscription-46e2634c-c64b-4c65-94b9-2cc9c960e91b
  • Pause/freeze: not offered. No pause. Turn off recurring billing and keep access until the term expires; an annual plan paid monthly still owes the rest of the term.
  • Account/data deletion: Turning off billing or cancelling does not delete your Microsoft account or OneDrive data; if OneDrive exceeds the free 5 GB after expiry, files may become read-only then eventually eligible for deletion. Account/data deletion is a separate request via account.microsoft.com privacy.

Scope & fairness

This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
