How hard is it to cancel Intercom?

Intercom scores 77/100 (grade B) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a clearly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve), email.

Last reviewed 2026-06-06 · Documented-Policy tier · grade B

Monthly and annual (non-contract) subscribers can self-serve cancel online via Settings > Subscription > Billing > Payment details > Cancel subscription; access continues until the end of the current billing period. Annual subscriptions are paid upfront and receive no prorated refund if cancelled early; downgrades generate a credit applied to the next invoice rather than a direct refund. Contract customers cannot self-cancel and must contact their Account Manager. Data is retained but inaccessible after cancellation; a separate workspace-deletion step is required to permanently remove data.

How to cancel Intercom

  • Channels: online (self-serve), email
  • Official cancellation page: https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/9088378-how-to-cancel-your-subscription
  • Pause/freeze: not offered. No formal pause or freeze option exists. Outbound messaging and Help Center features are automatically paused when a subscription becomes inactive, but there is no self-serve plan-pause feature. Contract customers must contact their Account Manager.
  • Account/data deletion: Cancellation does not delete data; it becomes inaccessible. Workspace data can be permanently deleted via Settings > Workspace > General (scroll to 'Delete workspace' section, enter full name to confirm). Deletion completes within 14 days and is irreversible. Annual contract customers cannot self-delete and must email [email protected]. Inactive workspaces without a subscription are automatically deleted after 180 days. https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/3687072-how-to-delete-your-workspace-data

Scope & fairness

This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
