How hard is it to cancel GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot scores 79/100 (grade B) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a clearly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve).

Last reviewed 2026-06-05 · Documented-Policy tier · grade B

GitHub Copilot individual plans (Pro, Pro+, Max) can be cancelled online at any time via Settings > Billing & licensing > GitHub Copilot > Manage subscription > Cancel subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, after which the account is automatically downgraded to Copilot Free. No prorated refund is issued for standard user-initiated cancellations; a prorated refund is only granted when a personal plan is automatically cancelled because an employer assigns a Business/Enterprise seat. No pause or freeze option exists.

How to cancel GitHub Copilot

  • Channels: online (self-serve)
  • Official cancellation page: https://docs.github.com/en/copilot/how-tos/manage-your-account/view-and-change-your-copilot-plan
  • Pause/freeze: not offered. No pause or freeze option is offered for GitHub Copilot individual subscriptions.
  • Account/data deletion: Cancelling Copilot downgrades you to the free tier; your GitHub account and data are not deleted. To remove personal data, you must separately delete your GitHub account via Settings, which permanently removes owned repos, forks of private repos, and account data — but comments/issues in other repos persist. GitHub states deleted accounts cannot be restored. https://docs.github.com/en/account-and-profile/how-tos/account-management/deleting-your-personal-account

Scope & fairness

This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
