How hard is it to cancel edX?

edX scores 80/100 (grade B) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a clearly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via online (self-serve).

Last reviewed 2026-06-05 · Documented-Policy tier · grade B

Subscribers cancel online by navigating to Account Settings > Orders and subscriptions > Manage my subscription, then clicking 'Cancel plan' in the billing portal — no phone or email channel is needed. Cancellation must be submitted before the renewal date to avoid the next charge; there is no advance notice period beyond that timing requirement. edX explicitly states it does not offer refunds for month-to-month or annual subscription payments once charged. Access continues through the end of the current paid billing period, after which enrollment may be downgraded to the free Audit Track.

How to cancel edX

  • Channels: online (self-serve)
  • Official cancellation page: https://www.edx.org/edx-terms-service
  • Pause/freeze: not offered. edX does not offer a pause or freeze option for subscriptions; only full cancellation is available to stop charges.
  • Account/data deletion: Users can request account deletion via a 'Delete my account' button in account settings. edX will permanently remove profile personal information within 30 days, but course data may be archived in anonymised form for educational research and shared with partner institutions that offered relevant courses. https://support.edx.org/hc/en-us/articles/206915007-Deleting-Your-Account-and-Personal-Data

Scope & fairness

This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
