How hard is it to cancel Allstate?

Allstate scores 46/100 (grade D) for how clearly it documents cancellation in the US — a poorly documented cancellation policy. Cancellation is available via phone, in person, postal mail, in-app.

Last reviewed 2026-06-06 · Documented-Policy tier · grade D

Allstate auto insurance can be cancelled by calling 1-800-726-6033, contacting a local agent by phone or in person, submitting written notice by mail, or through the Allstate mobile app for eligible policies — there is no full self-serve online cancellation on allstate.com. Per the standard policy contract (AIU492-1), the customer cancels by writing and specifying a future effective date; cancellation takes effect on that stated future date. Refunds for unused premium are calculated per state-specific rules and rates; mid-term cancellations may be subject to a short-rate fee (roughly 90% of unused pro-rata premium) depending on the state, and refunds under $2.00 are only issued upon request. No pause or freeze option exists — simply stopping payments does not cancel the policy.

Scope & fairness

This is the Documented-Policy tier: it measures how clearly the cancellation policy is published (cited, dated facts), not the behavioural experience of cancelling (Verified-Flow audit pending). Every company is scored on the same five dimensions with the same published weights — scores cannot be bought or removed. It is opinion grounded in disclosed facts, and not legal advice.
